Since the launch of my photography career, I decided one of my goals would be to share the best of what nature has to offer, and strongly advocate WHY it needs protection. The TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® race series is a very popular public event. I immediately saw an opportunity to connect the excitement of the Race, with the beauty of the Lakes via another popular public interest – photography.

Educational research vessels such as the Denis Sullivan (home port Milwaukee, WI) will be leading the Race fleet. My goal is to board a ship such as this to document a leg of the Race, to journal the important scientific studies taking place on board and report on their findings. While chronicling the research, I’m certain plenty of natural beauty photo ops will present themselves, along with thrilling Race highlights.

I have been in contact with many of the Race coordinators, and have been granted permission to board the Denis Sullivan as a media journalist / photographer on for a portion of the voyage.

While I have the proper photo equipment and ability to travel, I cannot personally fund the entire voyage as required. There are many other expenses involved. All donations will go directly to travel expenses – such as to cover my passport fee, access to the Festival areas, gasoline, lodging or other required expenses such as a return bus ride home from the destination port (most likely – Duluth, Minnesota).

Additionally, I must create the final ArtPrize exhibit pieces and cover the installation. If my funding goal is not reached by June 29, 2010 – all pledges are canceled, so you will only be contributing if the project is a “GO!”

Lake Michigan at Holland State Park

Over the past few months, I’ve really enjoyed giving photo presentations to various organizations such as Audubon chapters, wine dinners and outdoor enthusiast groups. I’d like to share a very nice letter I received this week from my last presentation in Grattan Township, Michigan at a wild game dinner event for a local sportsman’s club:

Healing Images Hardcover Photography Book

The books have arrived! The Healing Images book,  from the initial concept  – to its layout (which I did myself) – to its final creation, has been approximately a two-year project.

It brings me much joy to know the books will touch those who need some peace and serenity in their lives. The images featured in the book represent a portion carefully selected to be included in the permanent artwork collection of the Spectrum Health Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The use of artwork and photography throughout the building helps to create an environment that is therapeutic, supportive and restorative for patients and their families, as well as their caregivers.

Come celebrate the release of the book on Wednesday, March 17th from 11 am – 2 pm the Specialty Shop at the Pavilion (on the 3rd Floor next to the Cafe). I will be signing copies available for purchase. Discounts on my photo prints will be offered as well.
